neo geo sound issue
« on: January 05, 2011, 12:20:33 PM »
i have a mv1fs. low sound output. bench checked, and without a load, all 17 caps on the audio circuit tested fine. does it need to be under load to test/fail?

a 'supposed' good neo board was installed, and that one has no sound at all in my cabinet.

my cab speakers check out fine, they are 4 ohm (matches neo geo PCB specs), and i have spares i tested with as well. i'm going to drop my namco reunion board in there to see what i get.

i would hate to replace 17 caps if it's not needed, or the cause of my low audio. on that note, anyone good with neo geo boards that wants some cash to fix the sound issue i have? :)

Most NG boards are Stereo, and have stereo outputs on the jamma harness, and if you use a non-ng jamma harness, it can short out the audio amp.

yeah the 1 slot sometimes has a switch on the pcb that you have to move if using in a JAMMA cabinet (put to mono) otherwise you screw up the caps, found that out with a 2 slot way back ,put in JAMMA cab and test,  back into NG and no scratchy/no audio :(

neo geo cabinet. neo geo 1 slot. same low output whether stereo or mono chosen.

if a stereo vs. mono choice is really blowing out the amp chip, that's really weak. literally. :-[

every audio cap tests good, though (i think they're ALL audio, save 2). any other thoughts? :)

Most NG boards are Stereo, and have stereo outputs on the jamma harness, and if you use a non-ng jamma harness, it can short out the audio amp.

I don't understand how this would cause damage.  The stereo boards I have (not NeoGeo) appear to have the extra channel on pins M & 11 (in addition to the JAMMA-standard audio on L & 10).  M & 11 are unused in the JAMMA standard.  So unless a non-stereo-JAMMA cabinet was wired to short the unused M & 11 pins, I'm not sure how/why it would cause damage.  When I plug my stereo JAMMA PCB (police trainer) into a mono-JAMMA cabinet, no damage occurs, but of course I'm only hearing one of the channels (not sure which).

Is the NeoGeo stereo pinout whacked in some manner?

i've owned the game for 2 weeks. so for me, yes...it's been this way forever! ha!

harness looks and behaves 100%. and my namco reunion looks/sounds perfect in the neo cabinet. so it's the neo board. ;D
