Lotus Elise
« on: June 13, 2008, 07:57:15 PM »
What's the deal with the Lotus Elise? I know they're fun cars for what's a pretty cheap price given it's a lotus and all. But how are they really?

Saw one on the road today and they at least look neat.

Well living near the Lotus factory in England, and having a Job where /i used to drive all the luxury cars for Clients, The Lotus is a really fun car, and gives a big smile, but really isnt a practical day to day car, unless you travel light, that and the older Elan, were fun, but then on the flip side we had a Mazda dealer that had a race spec MX5 (Miata) and that was a lot more fun, but there was something about the Lotus, heck even my 4x4 had Lotus suspension on it  :)

Elise's are fun cars, but they are british cars, so parts will fall off randomly and the electronics (outside of the engine control module) tend to be cheap. Build quality is fairly poor, but it's a car made to be driven, and it excels at that. The exhaust fell off Nate's elise on sebring, rearview mirror has fallen off 3 or 4 times now, bolts are covered by cheap black stickers, etc.

My Dad had a Sterling for a couple years back in the early 90s - I swear the electrical system in that thing was infested with demons. The door locks would randomly lock and unlock themselves while you were just driving along, the alarm system would go off at random for no reason whatsoever, both while the car was sitting in the driveway on a calm night (seriously, didn't even need a stiff breeze to set it off) and sometimes while you were driving it. You could be in traffic and for no apparent reason you've suddenly got the emergency blinkers on, the headlights are flashing and it's honking at everyone around you. Charming during rush hour, I tell you.  :o

Also, my folks are heavy sleepers so sometimes the alarm would go off in the middle of the night. They'd sleep right through it more often than not. The neighbors sure didn't though.

Sometimes the radio station would change on it's own, and occasionally every light on the dashboard would light up (high beams, low fuel, check engine, low oil pressure, etc.) all at once.

That kind of put me off British cars.

Hey cool avatar Funky! yeah you summed it up, its like the old minis (not the BMW ones) they were fun to drive, our neighbour had a 1968 with a 2.0 Honda engine in it, not sure how he shoehorned that in, bit like the VW's we had with the alfa block in them :-)

I currently own a Lotus Exige S, and I can safely say (without getting into a very lengthy reply), it's the best money I have ever spent on a car, period (and I've owned a lot). 8)

And yes, I can attest to the build quality comment (my roof scoop fell off a few weeks back, lol).

Here's an old pic:
