Apple buying Beats
« on: May 10, 2014, 03:11:01 PM »
Quote
(Reuters) - Apple Inc is close to paying a record $3.2 billion for Beats Electronics, two people with knowledge of the matter said, an expensive foray into music streaming and headphone gear that would mark a departure for the usually cash-conservative iPhone maker.

Makes sense. Now people will be able to buy a crappy overpriced mp3 digital music player and a pair of crappy overpriced headphones then listen to crappy music from an overpriced streaming service.. with 1 single payment.

Huzzah!

You'd better tell Apple before they buy it, I think they were counting on your purchases to make the deal work!

It does seem like a perfect match, Apple is known for their overpriced hardware, and one common complaint about the iPod is the crappy low-quality earbuds that come with them (which many people still use for reasons of "style" - because the white cords scream "Mug me! I have an overpriced i-device and I'm also obvious to the outside world right now!").

So now they can offer an upgrade, for only a large additional fee you can get some better-sounding overpriced headphones along with your overpriced iPod. Match made in heaven.

Apple really doesn't seem to know WTF to do since Jobs died. They've already stuck a high-res screen on most of their existing products and seem completely at a loss as to what to do next. What made them successful again was radical changes.

Gaudy, brightly colored iMacs - they looked different and sold well. Then a few years later Apple told their customers "No, those are stupid and you were stupid for buying them! Everything electronic should be plain white! Buy these instead and throw away the old ones!". Then black, then a bit of silver/chrome. Now... nothing. They seem to be completely out of ideas, bad or otherwise.

The tell tale sign of lack of innovation is their recent "update" of the MacBook Air. No change from 2013 model except  a 0.1ghz bump in processor speed, and no retina display yet.

As much as I hate all the products involved here, from a business standpoint it's brilliant.

Apple has always relied on the uneducated consumer that has a decent amount of disposable income.. the exact same market that Beats targets. It's no coincidence that Apple Stores stocked both Beats and Bose headphones.. its exactly the sort of thing that would appeal there.

If this works they can grind out more profits in a variety of ways.. bundles.. 'beats edition ipods'.. it's endless really.

As far as Apple they do seem to have lost their way since Jobs started his new marketing job in the underworld. Apple has always been good at taking existing technology that hasn't been capitalized on properly and bringing it to the masses (usually with a snazzy design and color scheme). But what have they done recently? Just minimal updates.  They are well due for another 'i' device at this point.

Do you also see the stupid value they put on purchasing the Beats brand?

$3.2  Billion!  Come on. Only in the days of funny money can we see such horseshit valuations and other companies going for it.

steve jobs didn't come up with apple's products. crap, he started his career stealing from wozniak, and just rolled on...

did the inventive guys behind-the-scenes all leave?

beats headphones are just like all others. advertising to the masses is what sells all these messes.

And reason #1 why Dre has not and will never put out another record under his own name.  Beats sound like shit - perfect match for shitty Apple hardware.

Probably not, but the one think Jobs was willing to do was approve things that were a bit different. The new management may be getting some innovative product designs but is terrified of approving them.

They don't want to go too different and kill the cash-cow they've got. The problem is, if they don't make some radical changes then their products start to look old and stale. The competition comes up with slicker designs. This is already happening with curved screens and the like.

Apple has maybe 2 years left to come out with something new, shiny and very different or they're going to implode.

Yes but while Woz was still working on the Apple II (because it represented 2/3 of Apple's income), and Sculley was spearheading the Lisa, Jobs was spearheading the Mac and the rest is history.  Most of what Jobs accomplished involved being the person who shaped entire industries with a single product that was usually nitpicked to death by him followed by ruthless business deals with suppliers and usually brilliant marketing.

Maybe we are seeing Apple transform from internal growth via micro-product management by Jobs to become like all other Silicon Valley companies who grows by buying.  It's interesting to think that Apple actually has enough cash on hand to buy any, or several, Hollywood studios... it is one way around the licensing issues plaguing every streaming video effort.

All Apple needs to do is send someone over to Xerox to poke around for another idea they can steal. Problem solved.

Microsoft too... ultimately without someone to exploit a good idea, it would remain in garages for much longer.  Right now the biggest struggle in the internet age is how to get on-demand video, most of which is tied up in studio licensing restrictions and net neutrality debates.  Whomever cracks that egg will transform several industries into the modern age and reap huge profits.  Speculation has been that Apple would be the front runner, but one wonders if it requires Jobs' heavy hammer to do to Hollywood what he did to the music industry.
