Racism plays major role in opposition to Obama
« on: September 16, 2009, 07:29:07 AM »
(CNN) -- Former President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday that racial politics played a role in South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson's outburst during President Obama's speech to Congress last week and in some of the opposition the president has faced since taking office.

"I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he's African-American," Carter told NBC News. "I live in the South, and I've seen the South come a long way, and I've seen the rest of the country that shares the South's attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African-Americans."

"That racism inclination still exists, and I think it's bubbled up to the surface because of belief among many white people -- not just in the South but around the country -- that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country. It's an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply," Carter said.

Carter made similar remarks at an event at his presidential center in Atlanta, Georgia, The Associated Press reported Tuesday, pointing to some protesters who have compared Obama to a Nazi. "Those kind of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate on whether we should have a national program on health care," the former president said at the Carter Center, according to AP. "It's deeper than that."

He grouped Wilson's shout of "You lie!" during Obama's speech in that category, according to AP. "I think it's based on racism. There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president," he said.

"The president is not only the head of government, he is the head of state. And no matter who he is or how much we disagree with his policies, the president should be treated with respect."

Sigh - we knew the race card would come out eventually. With numbers plummeting I guess they have to resort to this.

Honestly people are just not digging what Obama is doing. A lot of people got swept up into "Obamamania" and ignored the fact that he was pretty far left and was out to make sweeping changes. Now that people are getting a taste of it, even a great speech or bumper sticker can't keep his numbers up. I think it's pretty sad that they are resorting to calling people who disagree with him racists. Yes, there's probably people in West Virginia that hate him because he's black but most of the opposition is unhappy with what he's doing, not his skin colour. His numbers started falling after the economy kept diving after the "stimulus" bill went through and of course health care "reform" hasn't been popular either. But I guess we're supposed to believe that none of those items are contributing to the backlash.. no, no it's because a bunch of people just woke up and realized he's black. wtf?

We knew going in Obama didn't really have the large scale government management experience that most previous presidents had (neither did McCain), that has nothing to do with him being "black" just the fact that his background was mostly in "community organization" versus say governing a state. Wilsons "you lie!" bit was stupid and innapropriate no doubt, but the Democrats boo'ed Bush on several occasions so its not exactly a precident. It's just pissy politics.

I think this only shows desperation. It's the last card they can play to explain things without really explaining things (ie its what he's doing stupid). I guess maybe their hoping they can guilt people into getting back in line? I don't know. I was hoping the theory of a racist America would die out after he was elected, but as long as it can be leveraged for political gain I suppose not. (see the careers of Jesse Jacksons and Rev. Sharpton)

And finally, who seriously listens to Jimmy Carter anyway?

Jimmy Carter...ain't he dead yet?

While I would say that racism does still exist in this country, I would say it is no longer a motivating factor for at least 90% of America.  Considering that white people are not 100% of the voters, what's everyone else excuse? Are the black people racist against him too? The hispanics? The asians? How about the Eskimo?  ;D

It's a play for white guilt, nothing more, and it's really sad actually. It shows a level of manipulation. If he can't control congress through a winning strategy, he might as well play "the card" and have them follow him through pressure to not look like racists.

Double Sigh...

Hehe...this comes up again. I just think this is a shot at scuttling opposing voices. I will be genuinely shocked if it works. Racism still exists, but if there are legitimate concerns about inconsistencies between descriptions of and the written text of the proposed health care program, to say "you lie" - while rude and over the top as it was - is not out of hand and especially denotes no racial undertones.

Besides, blacks are not known for lying, that's the gypsies.

Hey, who are all these "people" you speak of? You mean REPUBLICANS?  Because the REST of the world isn't quite ready to give him the hook just yet and recall or impeach him.  It's gonna take at LEAST one full term to even make a dent in all the shit the OTHER guy got us into.  I'm STILL willing to give him more than 9 months to save the world as we know it, no matter WHAT Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Sean Hannity tell me to do!

No...they're not SUPPOSED to...

However, I'm not sure I buy Carter's racism comment.  I think it was more due to Wilson being an opposing Republican just being a rude jackass rather than racism.  It was interesting to hear Carter making those charges, I think that's just from him being raised in the south and living through all the racism issues and seeing it through his lifetime.  I'm not sure he's any voice of the Democratic party or anything anymore though, as Jack mentioned not sure who listens to what he says anymore.

No I'm talking about the racists in West Virginia.

The rest of the world doesn't live here so it's easier for them to take a more positive position. They can just enjoy the Obama persona without consequence.

He's got full reign until 2010 to save the world. So far though I'm not sure if most of what he's been doing has done more good than harm (ie all the unchecked spending) but I guess we'll see. Still, doesn't matter what colour he is.

It's all the same as it always has been - Partisan Politics. Both sides are going to use whatever stones they can to hurl at the other side, simple as that. Right now the Democrats have the race card and thus they are going to use it.

I think most people will recall that period after 9/11 where criticism of Bush was met with calls of being "unpatrotic". Not an entire dissimilar analogue to being called a racist for opposing Obama. Here's what Mr. Carter had to say about that:

American media organisations, he adds, have been cowed, because they didn't want to be unpatriotic. There has been a lack of inquisitive journalism. In fact, it's hard to think of a major medium in the United States that has been objective and fair and balanced, and critical when criticism was deserved." source

So that was wrong, but basically flipping that around and doing the exact same thing here is.. OK?

Also, Carter isn't exactly without his own cries of racism, Many believe him to be an anti-semite.

Bottom line, this is all just a political stunt. Does racism still exist in this country? Of course it does on some level. No matter what, as long as there are differences between people there will be animosity at least on some level because of those differences. Unfortunatley I don't see that little snipit of human nature being completely abolished anytime soon. However, I think those instances have considerably lessened over the last 40 years. I honestly don't believe the vast majority of people are fed up with Obama because he's Black. But some people will believe whatever they want if it supports their position, especially if it allows them to label their opposition in a negative way. (ie you disagree with Obama, you are a racist!!)

Those people who strongly disapprove of Obama are 38% of the country vs 32% strongly approving. 51% somewhat disapprove (or stronger). 12% believe people who oppose Obama are racist.

According to Rasmussen anyways.

According to Gallup, 52% approve vs 41% disapprove (overall).

I agree that Bush was an idiot (worse than an idiot really), but you can place me in the "disapprove" column of Obama.

It's getting to the time when I start blaming the current president.. I won't be surpised if I remain disappointed.

poor jimmy. nobody is agreeing with him.

i think older people probably DO feel that racism is bigger than it actually is. They've seen it longer and more likely know other people that are less tolerant. Younger people probably have the perception racism is smaller because its tougher to find in their circles (unless the circle is rednucks in pickup trucks hehe)

I think you are wrong.
I know LOTS of closet racist republicans, it's funny to see their lives so miserable.
Their heads have been exploding since last November.
Hopefully a lot of them will have strokes over the next 9 years and get to experience the outdated health care they didn't want changed.
All of them KNOW they can't say it in public, but to each other I hear it all the time.
All the town hall disruptions and tea parties are just part of the 'attack everything Obama does' mantra.

AND fwiw, racism goes both ways.
I have met many people of color who take one look at my shaved head and think I'm KKK.

Racism both ways is taught to kids by the parents who raised them.
