Blu-ray question.
« on: June 23, 2017, 12:56:46 PM »
I'm thinking about getting one of these new Blu-ray player things.  If I do, will I be able to play my DVD's on it?  It's a big step and I want to make sure I make the right choice.

Thanks, Phil.

From the Best Buy website:

Q: Can I play DVDs, CDs and MP3 discs on a Blu-ray player?
A: DVDs will play on all existing Blu-ray players (with 1080p upconversion via HDMI in most cases); most current players will play DVD-R/RW recordable discs as well. Some early models lacked the ability to play CDs, but virtually all current models support CD playback (including homemade CD-Rs and CD-RWs). Many current models also support MP3 playback, but be sure to check individual product specs carefully for this feature if it's important to you.

Hey Grandpa, don't waste your money on a Bluray player in 2017.

Just download digital copies.

Or get Netflix.. they have all the Matlock and Murder She Wrote episodes already. You can throw away those VHS Box Sets.

Poo and fie on your "digital copies" I will not have my entire movie collection vanish because of a power surge...and I've yet to buy a digital download that included commentary tracks...bah!

And get off my lawn.

Oh.. is it a bad sign that my Echo crashed when I asked it if it was spying on me?

Grandpa?  LOL.

You are the dummy sitting on laser discs.

I bought all those 20 years ago and I'm not watching them now, i'm selling them to hipsters so they can then upscale them to 4k on their 70in Sharp Aquos because somehow that's better than a Bluray.

I used to buy lots of media.. VHS, then Laserdisc then DVD.. by the time Bluray rolled around I said hey.. fuck this.

At this point I buy like 4 Blurays a year, mostly 3D ones as thats a lot of bandwidth to roll through the network. But now 4k Blurays are out.. probably 8k Blurays at some point so I'm not building up another 'worthless' collection again.. as I don't know if the Hipsters will move on to Blurays at least not for another 30 years.

So yeah I'm happy just going digital.

Also.. go check your Blurays, they are prone to rot. I've already got discs that will no longer play.

So don't count on those physical copies lasting. :)

To be fair the ONLY discs I've had rot issues with are Warner Bros box sets

CEDs came out pretty late, long after VHS, Beta and Laserdisc so it's only the grandfather to movie formats on Vinyl.

Terrible format btw. They wear out just like Vinyl and if they've ever been in a high heat environment (ie any garage) they are toast.

Capacitance Electronic Disc, CED.  Not the greatest thing to play over and over, as it wears out quickly, but has great covers!  Released in 1981, and became obsolete in 1984.  VHS had already taken hold, beating out Betamax.  Being able to record, erase and record again, took over, as a LaserDisk LD or CED was just too expensive a format.
