E3 Report Card
« on: July 17, 2008, 06:52:11 PM »
Was looking for info on the PS3 and WII, found this from some random site:

http://blogs.theage.com.au/screenplay/archives/010029.html

Nothing mind blowing from any company, but it does appear that Microsoft had the closest to exciting news. Sony seemed a bit underwhelming. Yeah we're all hyped for LBP, GOW3 and Reistance 2 were givens.. I think they need something big though to close the gap. They are finally outselling the 360 but not by huge margins and they're already quite a ways behind.. In one respect they've already screwed up pretty big as they were the defacto #1 console for a decade and now they're 3rd. They need to step it up. Without their dominance big stuff won't just come to them, they're going to have to work.

God only knows what Nintendo is doing. They better hope the Wiimania continues 'just because' as this emporer is sadly lacking clothes.

And so it ends. Goodbye, E3 2008! You were fun in parts, confusing in others and disappointing in many. Actually, disappointing in most . Few important announcements, almost zero new game announcements and a pair of very missable keynote addresses will see this go down as one of the "worst" E3s in memory.

I could not of said it better myself!

This years Amusement Show AOU in Japan was better then E3 now that is fucking sad!

GOW3=God of War 3??? That's totally awesome! It's about time!!

Sony devotes too much resources to the PS2, IMO. There is only so much talent / dev studio / etc to go around with PS3+PS2+PSP. In retrospect, it wasn't dick of Microsoft to drop the Xbox1 like a bad habit... just smart business!

Once again, it's not bad business to make money. Also, how many 1st party Sony PS2 releases have their been? Are any of the Sony studios even still making PS2 games? It's probably mostly 3rd party companies trying to tap the budget market. What are you going to do, tell them to stop making money? Let the PS2 continue as long as the market supports it.. there's nothing wrong with that. Also remember the PSP is pretty close to a PS2 so games can be cross ported easily supporting both systems. It's a win win.

If MGS4 came out as a PS2 only title, I could see a problem. But it's not like that Pinball game I just bought for the PS2 would have had much of a boost on the PS3 hardware anyway and it would have went from being a MSRP $15 game to at least $40 which means I wouldn't have bought it!

I heard that sony eventually wants to sell old PS2 games thru DLC via the PS Store, so im guessing eventually they would like to phase out the PS2 and eliminate b/c from the new systems. But yeah if the PS2 is going to keep selling, why not just keep selling titles for 15-30$ instead of 12.99 downloads I suppose.

They'll get more of a percentage off a $12.99 download than a game @ $15 retail, plus since they're not making games any more really the new games at retail are mostly 3rd party.

Still, I can't imagine that's the reason they ditched the options. I can only guess that keeping the PS2 chips on the board really was expensive, or at least expensive enough to lose out during cost cutting measures. They also ditched the card readers and additional USB ports. How much does a USB port cost, really?

maybe they're hoping to make money on Sony branded USB hubs that match the PS3? (do they even make them?) cause accessories are profitable?

going from 4 to 2 seems silly, unless its some attempt to make the 4-port units seem 'higher end' and more 'feature laden/luxurious'.
not everything is wireless and you still have to charge controllers up. i like how the x360 usb port in the back. if the ps3 had that, that's where i'd plug in a hub to unclutter the front.

Or perhaps they needed to cut the price on the unit and decided to jetison everything they could to mitigate the additional loss which included additional USB ports? Sometimes things are as simple as they seem, especially when the answer involves money.

like you asked... how much are 2 USB ports at the economies of scale of the PS3? i guess iSupply could know..

Yes, it was a rhetorical question.
