REVIEW : FURIOSA and a rant about why movies are bombing
« on: June 01, 2024, 05:47:50 PM »
Saw Furiosa. There's really not a lot to say.. it's great. It's not as good as Fury Road mind you, but its close and that's fine. While I wasn't necessarily clamoring for a Furiosa backstory in particular I was happy to get more George Miller Wasterland Hijinks and this film delivers. The cast is great as well.. Chris Hemsworth makes a great villain and Anna Taylor Joy (or whatever) does a fine job. Overall recommended if you liked the last one.

Now the big question, why did this mega-bomb? Like the worst memorial day opening in 41 years or some such.

Honestly I think it was a few factors.. one it's a sequel 9 years later which is a long time. Also I think the shortening of the Theatrical window is getting ridiculous again. The Fall Guy (very mid, good action sequences not so great script) was only in theaters for a little over 2 weeks before it hit streaming. With theater prices at all time highs people take notice of that. Why is anyone spending $50-$100 to see Furiosa at a theater when they can rent it at home for $19.95 (or whatever). It's a dangerous game the studios are playing.. well assuming they care about the theatrical revenue stream anymore.. maybe they don't.

A lot of the pitchfork media was pointing the finger at a female lead or that it didn't have Mad Max in it. I don't know if this is the case. This movie definitely wasn't woke nor did it have any political messaging. I get that's been an issue with a lot of recent movies but I don't think that was a problem here. One thing that is something for these studios to take note of though.. Women don't give a fuck about genre films, at least not as much as they want. So having a female lead absolutely does not guarantee the female audience is going to show up. I took my wife to see Furiosa and she's pretty geeky but thought it was boring. She just doesn't appreciate post apocalyptic epics.. she liked Dune though.

Point being for the films that are obviously making big deals about female leads and such (coff coff Disney) it's a waste of time as the box office has shown. Dorky SCI-FI movies are still mostly the domain of dorky dudes.. sorry. Yes movies can crossover but only if they are good and accessible. Anyway rant off, nothing woke about Furiosa go check it out.. save the vitriol for the Ray Skywalker movie which is just another bad idea waiting to happen.

I want to see it but have been blowing it off because its too fucking long.

Two and half hours for an action movie is ridiculous I don't care what it is.

That being said I will probably watch it before it leaves the bigger screens, just have to find a time where I think I can hang with that long a movie.

Be nice if people learned how to edit movies again... I promise you could wack at least 30 minutes out of it and no one would care.  :P

Seems like there are better things to do on Memorial Day weekend than shelp to the theater, so that can't help the numbers, and so many steaming options that I forget theaters exist.   I was at a shop next to the local NCG theater today so I decided to check it out.  $9+ for a matinee didn't seem unreasonable.   At NCG you pick your seat online and all seats are big comfy (electric) recliners, so no problem sitting still for 2.5hrs there.

Furiosa was fun and full of mad max feels, and more roaring engines than a weekend at Daytona.  Of course it's 2024 and we have been through 11 seasons of The Walking Dead and six TWD spinoffs, so the gore, torture, and deaths have to one up every apocalypse that has come before, so I would skip this if you're squeamish, but the payoff is worth it.

It's not about that it's about being bored or annoyed when movies just ramble on for no reason other than bad or no editing.

Movie studios don't seem to think people's attention span has decreased?

I think more and more filmakers overshoot now (cause digital is way easy that way) and edit their own stuff.

They probably shoot 20 hours of footage for movies now where that used to be way too expensive to do... then their ego cant let them cut it down right.

maybe they were trying to take advantage of the lull in tv shows ending the seasons or not airing.. but i agree, better things to do on a 3 day weekend then sitting in the movies, maybe that is the reason tv shows take the week off ( late night tv, etc )

i enjoyed it the movie, didn't really feel i needed any prior mad-max experience to enjoy the story.

Memorial day always has other things to do but people usually still go to the movies.. which is why this one bombing is the worst one in 42 years.

I do still think streaming is the most likely culprit.

We'll see how something like Deadpool does. If that underperforms then there's a serious problem

I'll see this, but I guess I'm part of the problem because I'll likely hold off till streaming.

Not a lot of movies that I'll see in the theater nowadays (unless my wife drags me there).

As for Memorial Day, I was spending the weekend outside, grilling involved, etc, etc.

Maybe if I see other great reviews about the action sequences I'll consider the theater as I remember seeing Mad Max Fury Road at the theater and thought it was great.

I saw it a few days ago, definitely worth the theatre on as big a screen as you can find.

Kept my attention for that long but mainly with the visuals... story arc is OK but about as deep as an old school kung fu movie.

The cinematography and the action is 95% of the appeal.

This is the type of movie that goes from great watch in a theatre to kinda suck on TV etc IMO.

Yeah this is a movie that's actually worth seeing on a decent screen. George Miller knows how to make a visually appealing movie.

It's also a bummer because he had plans for another film that will probably not happen now after this has imploded.

It did even worse the 2nd week.

Yeah, I agree, well worth seeing, esp a theater with good sound, the engine roars were great.

If it's no Max Rockatansky it's crap.

Oh and obligatory old man rant...I stopped going to theaters because people don't know how to act in public anymore. Last time I went to the movies some stupid NY Guido took a short half assed swing at me when I asked him to stop blinding me with his phone, when I didn't flinch he became even more of an asshole and since the wife REALLY didn't want me tossing paws in public I just got a refund and haven't been to the movies since.
