Desoldering tip
« on: July 07, 2025, 11:07:17 PM »
Don't know if this will help anyone or not but it can't hurt.

Working on a mod and I need to remove the screw terminals from these 5V relays.

I have a vacuum gun (Hakko 808) and it just was not doing the job. I tried removing the solder but the pins were stuck in the holes, added more solder and tried again still no luck (and yes, I am moving the tip around as I vacuum to try and make sure the pin is free).

I was watching a bunch of You tube looking for tips then I thought about my hot air station (Hakko 850). I decided to see if it would work. I tried one relay that I used the 808 on and one "virgin" board. On the virgin board after about 20 seconds the terminals fell right out, The holes still had solder in them but that will be easy to deal with. I then tried the other board, same amount of time but this time the holes were spotless.  ;D

Once again, just sharing something that worked for me in the off chance it helps someone out.

i was going to suggest using hot air since you don't need the terminals, just flip the board upside down and heat the terminals and they should drop off.

I fix things.. all the things.. but you have reach out first to see how my queue looks. ( all things arcade/pinball/computer ) ... do not do house calls, repairs are generally live streamed on twitch.

I was a bit surprised when I didn't see anyone suggesting hot air to remove through hole components, although, I probably only searched for 15 to 20 min. Usually the Hakko 808 works fine, but for whatever reason these pins wanted to fuse back to the board (literally all the pins were fused, no free pins at all). :P

Regardless, hot air is the shit and I will use the 850 for a lot more than shrinking heatshrink now  ;D
