REVIEW - WEAPONS
« on: August 13, 2025, 12:31:21 PM »
Zach Creggar (of Whites Kids U Know) fame is back with another horror movie. Recap.. I thought his first movie Barbarians was absolute shit. I give it credit for trying a gimmick with the story basically resetting half way through but it didn't work. Also the actual story itself was cliche, boring and dumb. But here we are a few years later and nothing else is playing this week so let's go.

Shockingly this movie is a huge improvement. It plays around with the story again but it picks up on various characters and their intersecting stories with each vingette filling in part of the overall puzzle. It's a lot like Pulp Fiction versus whatever the hell Barbarian was trying to do.

The big thing here is the actual story is a lot more compelling and character driven. I don't want to get too much into spoilers.. but it deals with the sudden any mysterious disappearance of all the children in a grade school class one night and that's impact on a small community.

Throw in a solid cast with great performances and good pacing despite it's slow burn nature and you've got a great horror mystery.

This one is an easy recommend and a great bounce back. I'm looking forward to his take on Resident Evil.

unrelated: on social media, there are stories floating around of 88 kids missing in virginia.

on an average week, virginia loses 100 kids. this is from the police.

so they lost LESS kids last week.

ah, the news...always making normal things sound bad.

I'll second this one as a good watch. Its still in theatres and worth checking out in one...

I wish they didn't sort of reveal what was going on so soon in the movie (or made it shorter).

It went from what the hell is going on here to wondering hows it going to end way too soon for me.

Would have been cooler if they didn't drag it out so much but it still works.

Basically they told you what was going on to a degree around minute 90, then there was another 30 + minutes or so of movie..

Once you know whats going on its just about how they are going to wrap it up and the movie lost most of the tension it built up.

Would have been better just to do the reveal of what was going on and end it quick.

In other words like most movies these days they could have used a better editor and cut 30 minutes out but I say that every movie.  :P

Well I mean they tell you what happened to the kids right before the final act because the final act is all about the resolution of what happened to the kids once they find out.

I'd rather them do that and have a proper final act with a satisfactory ending then bet the farm on a last minute twist ending that probably wouldn't work as well.

There was a period I was afraid they were going to go a different direction (think Last of Us) but luckily they didn't do that.

yah I get it... they did a good job, it just sort of took the air out of the movie for me once I figured out what was going on.

Would have worked better to me if there wasn't still so much time left in the movie.

There was also some school shooting/ anti gun stuff (random gun floating over the house at one point) in there also that is subtle but felt a little forced.
