WH2O vs BSD
« on: October 29, 2010, 12:03:38 AM »
I am liking these two titles and might be inserting a new pin if "Tron Legacy" doesn't happen with Stern so just wanted to get some opinion on which would they prefere if they had to choose either a WH20 or a BSD...? I am leaning towards WH20...(Rudolf Yete got me)

I picked up a WH20 a couple weeks ago and love it. I bought a CV at the same time and WH20 is getting a lot more play.

The PF is waxed a plays really fast. It's an extremely brutal game...not forgiving at all. Unfortunately, most of my games are short (which is what keeps me coming back to it). Hopefully my games will get longer over the next couple weeks...

If you haven't yet, make sure you play the two games and do not go off of the art package or theme only.  They are totally different styles.

BSD if set up correctly is a monster so to speak.  Painfully brutal at times especially if the correct shorter lightning flippers are installed.  The triple stacking of the multiballs is a main goal in the game and is very satisfying.  There is no "wizard mode" per se.  That is not a bad thing, just a fact. Game is dark themed and may not be the best overall flavor in terms of drawing people in for fun.

WH2O seems to have a of more traditional DMD type game feel to it. There are goals you try to accomplish working toward a wizard mode. It has a third flipper which provides some additional shots and combos over a 2 flipper game. The game is much more lighthearted.

If I had to choose only one, I would go with WH2O.

I love both games.  BSD is fast playing and has some great sound drops and I like the dark theme.  WH20 is just plain fun to play with great ball action and lots of great visuals.

I've never played BSD so I can't comment on that, but WH2O is a fun game with lots to do. I seem to be in the minority here, but the theme wore on me after awhile and I couldn't stand hearing another round of that music either. The whole strategy of hitting the skill shot, hitting the whirlpool, catching the ball, flipping it back to no way out, hit insanity falls, then repeat got a little boring for me. Then again, if my shooting is off, the game kicks my ass, lol. It throws modes in there to break that cycle up, but it always comes back to that simple strategy. But, if you've never owned one, you should definitely get one some time.

I would buy whatever you can get the best deal on at the time and don't over pay for a game because it is hyped up.

Oh, and just so you know I'm not crapping on WH2O too much, I just replaced it with Indy 500. Another Dennis Nordman game. He is fast becoming my favorite designer.

My son and I like when WH20 randomly/rarely says "Get the extra ball YA WEINER"! My first impressions of the music/theme are really positive. Like anything, I see how it might get old after awhile.

I can see mrbones point that once you master the strategy/shots, the game can be repetitive, however that's true for most pins. I think it's just a matter of how long it takes you to master the pin. For LOTR, I started getting a little bored after 2 years (I reached every mode except "valinor" multi-ball). I still love the pin, however I don't play it as much now...

As far as purchasing one goes...there are a lot of WH20's out there. Unfortunately, many of them are in lousy condition (and internet vendors are still asking 3-4k for them!). If you are technical and don't mind working on the pin, there are lots of choices. If not, and you want it to work great "out of the box", then you'll have to pay a bit more. FWIW, WH20 is currently on treasure coves "top 10" list, so it's harder to find deals now.

Yes, that is all very true. I had mine for two years if that tells you anything and it was a players pin without the cool waterfall topper. For me, every pin gets old eventually and it's great to be able to trade things out. I can remember being excited as hell to get WH2O home. After I sold it, I technically got a Dr Who to replace it as I love Dr Who. But, in my collection I was missing that Nordman feel I had from WH2O. The great ramps, gadgets and locks. Getting that Indy 500 last week filled the gap.

FWIW, All pins have a limited shot selection.

To really enjoy WH2O, you need to have the L-6 ROM and PLAY the pin...shoot for the flashing arrows and progresss through the game, get to Wet Willie's mode and ultimately Vacation Jackpot.  Very satisfying and challenging.

If you just try to flip around on this game, you will get bored quickly.

Don't have any experience with BSD but if you could get a WH2O at a good price (with the topper) I would jump on it. A nice WH2O with a good topper would run about $2200-$2600 while a nice BSD would be about $1200-$1400 so if the WH2O did not work for you it would be very easy to unload and then you could get a BSD.
Pins: TAF, FG (not the Ah-Haaa one), SM, FH, LOTR. NGG
Past Pins: SM, IJ, STTNG x2, WH2O x3, CFTBL, NGG, ES, MB, TFTC, LW3, TZ, SS, BG, LOTR, Monopoly couple of EM's

Would need higher resolution pictures to determine the PF condition, however the overall machine looks nice...

I have a BSD and let me just say... it is one damn hard machine and more challenging then fun at times.

Whitewater I haven't played nearly as much but is more fun I think despite the music which I find annoying ..

BSD will hurt your feelings sometimes if its setup fast but is a whole lot of fun the times you can get it going into stacked multiball craziness.  30  milllllion etc etc ;)

Ive had games where balls drain without ever hitting a flipper. good times.

If you like fast hard games and like the theme.. I would say BSD. If you more fun maybe whitewater.
