they're predicting it hits "us" as a tropical storm. anything category 3, we basically ignore until 12 hours out. tropical storms, category 1 and category 2, we go to the beach. ;D

basically, i guess i'm saying look out nicaragua with how accurate forecasts usually are even 24 hours beforehand.

Katrina was what, a 12 hour warning?

Irma, we were told to run for our lives. "Naples? don't worry, you're good". that worked out well.

summer: we get 2 containers of gas and drinks. we don't want to be 1 of the 100,000 stuck in traffic on the highway.

Hey now wait a minute. Im not ready to cover the freaking windows again. Its too much work and it makes the house like a cave.
Freakin' hurricanes, one time I bailed out and my buddy and I we went up to Georgia, then it changed direction and was gonna hit Georgia so we drove over outside of Bombingham. Then it didnt do anything to Florida so we drove back here. Ever since I just stay here. I do have to admit we have been hit twice, the first one that made me decide to drive to Georgia that time really wrecked Port Charlotte, went right up rt 17 busting up shit all the way to Sebring and beyond.
Ive been thru a blizzard in '66. we got 3 feet in a couple of days and then my high school had to cancel "winter weekend" two weeks later for lack of snow! Went right by a tornado where the sky turned Green in Illinois on my way to California in 1986 and got slapped by a small one last year. Was laying on my waterbed watching the beginning of the S.F. vs Oakland World series when a 7.1 or was it 6.1? earthquake came thru. It was called the loma prieta earthquake and it knocked down some highways up in San Fran. At my house I watched the waves in the slab moving up and down in waves. Now that I will admit scared the shit out of me.
Then I got smacked again what? two years ago with another cane that took out my only good tree.
I think its me, wherever I move be it Syracuse ,Monterey or Port Charlotte, these things follow me. T'aint no place safe. What I want to know is why Tampa ,which is about 1 inch above sea level never gets hit. How can that be?
Any of you guys old enough to be in hurricane Andrew? That was what mid sixties? I remember when it happened tho because the nightly news really covered it. That was a bad ass , terrible cane thats for sure.

Yeah, for the Tampa area it looks like it'll be nothing more than a lot of rain at worst. Maybe not even that.

Definitely have to wait and see what the track is on Saturday/Sunday though and see if it has gained strength.

Even a tropical storm could do some damage in a direct hit on the west coast, but probably not too much to worry about.

I wouldn't say no to getting Tuesday off work for a hurricane day, but I'd rather go to work Tuesday than have it fuck up my Labor Day.
Power outages in August... ugh...

If a hurricane actually does come near the Tampa Bay area I've got to go pick up my parents and drive them out to my sister's place, since she lives much farther in-land.
She'll be thrilled! All the usual bitching and moaning and a hurricane on top of that!

a tropical storm is a joke. we get rain events that are stronger than any TS in history. crap, a category 2 is a f-ing joke. unless you're living in a tent.

94? really? and Andrew was the one that tore up the areas near Miami correct? Was what "Dade County codes" are based on? Maybe Im confused. I remember the terrible earthquake that hit Alaska when I was a kid, It seems to me I was like , let me think now, Im thinking early to middle 60s. . Man memory banks get rusty at times, especially about remembering things a while back that didn't impact you directly.
Its kind of embaressing guess I can't remember shit. Im off by only 30 years is all, jeeze.
 Sorry about that.
BUT , I'm sure of this, Charly , the one that smashed up Port Charlotte, I didnt have window coverings, I really lucked out on that because the cane was small, strong as hell, but small. In my area trees and roofs got nailed but starting only 3 to 5 miles south of me it looked like a bomb went off. The width of damage went thru Punta Gorda and down towards Fort Myers.
I beat the odds on that one, had my roof replaced I think a month before.
You guys sure do take these things easily, I guess if you have been thru a bunch they get almost "normal" whatever normal is.
One thing I have noticed, The Weather channel really tries to scare you, I guess they think that will keep you glued on their stationed.
Yeah, hurricanes, I hate them, all they do is fuck stuff up.

Andrew was the one that tore up the areas near Miami correct? Was what "Dade County codes" are based on? Maybe Im confused.

In 1992, Florida was operating under the South Florida Building Code.  In 1994 the SFBC was significantly updated and the cover of the 1994 SFBC had on the cover the thermal imagery of Hurricane Andrew just as the eye hit Florida.  New construction requirements suddenly became much more involved and insurance premiums went up tremendously.

In 2001 the SFBC turned into the Florida Building Code (FBC) and has had several revisions over the past 18 years.

In 2006 there were more changes after the devastation of Wilma throughout a large part of Florida in 2005. Insurance premiums went up and many carriers shut down or stopped writing policies in Florida.

Things are changing again due to the effects of Irma from 2017.

Basically, each time a big storm happens, there is a reactionary response in the Code and Insurance Industry.  Some of the modern design criteria is pretty astounding.

For older houses, (built pre-FBC) there are also retrofit requirements when a major project is undertaken at a home (such as a roof replacement).
