Here we go again.. Helene edition
« on: September 25, 2024, 08:08:33 AM »

I only got concerned when they said it was going to miss Tampa and hit the bend.. as they are always wrong.

Now we're back in the cone.

We shall see...

Tampa has had a pretty amazing ability to dodge a direct hit, storms are getting so big that it seems unlikely that will go on forever.

The one back in 2017 I think? I left because it was supposed to go right over my house and it didn't come close.

Tampa is ill prepared for a real storm, downtown areas flood just with heavy rain.

Lots of people I know there don't take these seriously either just because they have never gotten hit.

we are going to get hit by the rain and wind off the right side of the storm... coming up the west coast is bad, expect tropical force winds 50+mph.

First time I've seen all the "spaghetti models" agreeing on the same path, they've almost always got one or two going out in random directions, but not this time.

Looks like the panhandle is in for it.

100% this. Tampa does have some natural shielding, but we're totally fucked if there's even a moderate storm that goes right up the bay, and even worse if it does it at high tide.

South Tampa has no drainage and is very low-lying, every intersection floods whenever there's a regular thunderstorm.

Then people are going to be shocked and dismayed when instead of insurance payouts they get bankruptcy notices from the insurers.

There are some areas of south Tampa where you can't even buy flood insurance and if you can it will be crazy expensive and some BS company that would never pay you anyways.

I was in zone X but in a heavy storm Kennedy a few blocks away would have water half way up the stop sign at the corner. The entry to Selmon expressway would be blocked with 3 feet of water until it drained off. Thats just normal summer storms..

Nevermind what goes on in storms down on Bayshore, Harbor Island etc..

Just a matter of time and like I said people have gotten complacent since they never get hit.

 PORT CHARLOTTE REPORT, HURRICANE HELENE:\
Helene went by all afternoon and is still blowing around a lot here in PORT CHARLOTTE. We had some very high tides up where I am almost into North Port. My dock was completely under water. I tried to walk down and check out the sea wall and all that stuff but I had to dodge a flying Palm Frond at shoulder length height so I came back inside rather then test out how much my broken neck has heeled since I broke it in December. Anyway that's the highest tide I've seen in the 23 years I've been here.
Things are slowly slowing down though, rain has stopped, wouldn't be surprised if we did get a few passing rain events.
Damage is what Youd expect but around here we all have new roofs in the past 2 years so I don't think there is a whole lot of damage around here..
It has totally shut off ROKU though and of course there's no one to call on that. Anybody know? I heard their towers in TAMPA were blown to shit but don't know for sure.
OK  so that's  the PORT CHARLOTTE report. How's everyone m doing ? I'm praying for everyone North of Tampa

Wide Spread Storm Surge from St Pete Beach to Pan Handle, I have friends who have lost everything in Pasco and Hernando Coastal areas.   Clearwater beach and Barrier Islands are Off limits, all tampa bridges are currently closed until inspected.

lol. they're not going to spend that kind of money on postage. they'll just wait for you to actually file a suit against them, and THEN, they'll claim "bankruptcy"

How did everyone from the village in critical West Coast storm surge areas do?   I hope and pray everyone made it out without too much loss or issue.

Well that sucked and continues to suck.

My place flooded but it's a rental so I'm not so concerned about that. Car flooded and totaled though, so that's a bitch.

Parent's place got it real bad - I'll post the whole story when I've got a better computer to use, only working device right now is an old Macbook which is really reminding me how much I hate MacOS.

Everybody lived, even my parent's idiot cat who took a swan dive into the flooded den rather than going up the stairs.

At a hotel for a while.

Just as everyone is digging themselves out.. here comes Milton right down the gullet.

This one fucking scares me.

We've always said if Tampa takes a direct hit it's going to be bad.. real bad. We may finally see what that looks like.
