Title: Hurricane Irma
Post by: mcluvin on September 04, 2017, 06:40:58 PM
I think we're fooked!  Anything stronger than a CAT2 and we are probably leaving.  What are you guys planning to do?

Not listen to the local fear mongers (news) and wet my pants over a storm that's at least 4 days from Cuba.  ;)

not doing a thing.  not even paying attention until thursday, if that.

the worst storms are the ones they don't predict or track. harvey was supposed to hit texas as only a weak tropical storm.

2 best computer models can't even agree on irma. one has it turning 100% north, the other has it sweeping slightly south.

yesterday, north carolina was in the danger zone. saturday, it was new york.

We lost our home to Wilma, so we’re keeping an eye out. I don’t recommend getting all riled up, but always pay attention.  Given our past experience, we have all of our supplies already.

Just a little side note from my father, a public insurance adjuster.

As most of you know, I am a Public Adjuster, I work for homeowners and business owners, against the insurance companies.
Just a heads up to everyone. Before the storm you should walk around your house or business and video, both inside and outside. This one may veer off, as they sometimes do, but just in case, this will eliminate the argument from the insurance companies that damage was pre-existing. Also keep your policy info together for easy access. If this does hit, the response time will not be great for most, so take pictures of any damage that occurs. This is your best ammunition for getting things settled, without too much aggravation. Make sure your prep is done early, and be ready for no power for an extended amount of time.  If anyone encounters a problem with their insurance company, or has questions, please feel free to call or message me.
  Everyone stay safe!

Dang it, another storm...It rains twice a day now.

1-866-9-NO-SCAM to report price gouging, like uh, gas going up again because they can.  If we have not had a shipment of gas from Texas since last week, the current gas we are using are from the storage tanks stored there months ago.  Why do they charge us .75 cents more???

Gouging which is sanctioned, plain and simple.
I monitor commodity prices including world crude and the prices have remained flat if gone down over past 2 weeks.
Since supply isn't really an issue (anyone not able to get gas anywhere in past 2 weeks?)
And demand isn't up except only in a few regions prices should not rise but they are at the pump.

Now speculation is driving prices up.  People getting screwed again.

We are prepared and will stay if it's a Category 4 or less by this weekend.  BUT ....If it's a Category 5 we would definitely evacuate!  I drove through Homestead, FL in 1992 after Hurricane Andrew hit.  It looked like a bomb went off.  From I-95 and the Florida Turnpike you could see entire subdivisions, all houses with CBS construction, where every home did not have a roof left.

I agree with what's been said, don't panic, watch and just be prepared.

Good luck to all!

It's still far enough away that we're doing that ring around the rosie snake dance bit seeing where it's going to go.

I'm hoping it just strafes the tip of Florida and doesn't hit us full on.

well, I did break down to get gas at 10AM (it's only going to go up for the next month anyways...). had to grab some a/c parts, and the roads are packed, the crashes are plenty, the impatience is high, and the nuttiness has started:

I always had some romantic Hemingway thoughts of wanting to live on islands like Bimini or something but I'm not so sure these days.

Roads are crazy, no canned food left in the stores, lines at the gas stations, two hour wait to get propane.
I'm as prepared as I can be.
Good luck everyone.

Yeah, that current path doesn't look great for Tampa/St. Pete/Clearwater, but it's definitely too early to tell yet.

If it hits Tampa Bay, major bad news.

If it doesn't hit but comes close it looks like it's going to happen around Sunday - so probably no day off work for that.

It's lose-lose.

edit: some of my co-workers are saying that Loews and Costco are ALREADY sold out of plywood, bottled water, etc.

I was gonna buy my regular weekly groceries on my lunch break later today, guess I'll see if there's anything left.

So at lunch I figured I'd go out to the Publix and pick up some water.. just in case.

Yeah, we're in full-on mad house mode already. Never seen people got this nutso so quickly. Publix was out of everything except Perrier.. at that point i figured I'll just get some Bud Lite theres only a 2% difference between that and water anyway.

Old people milling about pretty much summed up my Publix. It was like a zombie movie in there.

I had luck at 7-11 on Water.. they had the 1 Liter bottles for $1 each. Overpriced still definitely but better than nothing. I have a shelf full of water now and some pudding from the Dollar store.. and a bottle of Tequila. We'll be fine.

For those still looking, try the most out of the way Dollar General you know of.  I scored 24 packs for $2.50 each.  The truck was just offloading them.

Don't forget to walk around your house taking video, take video inside your house and record any high-value items for insurance now so that you can have an easy settlement later if it comes to that. If there's one thing that insurance companies Will do, it's tell you that everything had damage before the storm. So get good proof it will make your claim a lot faster

I hope it doesn't come to that, stay safe either way

10:00 update with max storm speeds really downplayed what rick scott and others have been saying for days:

"major storm, we're all in danger, evacuate while you can..." not good with people running out of gas in St Augustine / Gainseville on their way out of the state. and I can't imagine the trip back down.

hurricane force winds are 60 miles out from center. the rest of this 400 mile wide hurricane is the weather we can get on any given sunday.

now that I've said that, I still don't trust the news. so playing it hour by hour.

stay safe all. :)

edit: fee bad for the keys and our Miami/Homestead boys, they will get the brunt of this thing no matter how many times the track changes.

That's why there is new code for the roofs ...

And don't think just because your roof is older, it doesn't meet/exceed the code.  I have my original roof from when my house was built in 96.  Had to have it inspected a couple years ago for insurance.  The inspector said my roof was built well in excess of the 2001 codes.  He stressed that those codes are minimum requirements.

Yeah, this is really starting to look like a worst-case scenario for anyone who lives around Tampa Bay (including me).

Very likely it'll still be category 4 or a strong 3 when it gets here, worse if it stays out just along the coast in the Gulf - the warm water will keep it powerful, and they seem to keep adjusting the track a little West with each update.

If it passes Tampa on the East side it might push water out of the Bay, which would be fine - though still lots of wind damage, rain, etc. - if it passes on the West or right up the middle of the Bay though, it pushes all the water from the Gulf into the Bay, and from the Bay onto land that's going to be very, very bad flooding - like Houston, maybe worse.

I'm in Zone A so going to pick up my parents (they live on a canal that leads out the Bay - not good) and take them to my sister's place in Lutz - she's at least out of the evac zones, though unfortunately she does live next to a small lake. No tidal action at least.

Hope the track changes, or it weakens a lot, or I'm just totally wrong (I certainly hope I'm wrong) - but damn, I think the worst case scenario is that my house will be uninhabitable, so will my office (in a low-lying part of Oldsmar, near the water - and we literally just moved from Dunedin 2 weeks ago), and most of my possessions will be gone - along with many, many other people in exactly the same situation. Out of a job, homeless, etc.

Even the best case scenario looks like some damage, probably no power for a week or more.

Shitballs.

WAY TO GO COMCAST

My power went out for about 5 hours last night for no discernible reason - no rain, not much wind. Whole section of my neighborhood was out. It was like a preparation drill or something - "Get used to this, you're going to experience a whole lot more of it real soon!"

Certainly they do and I recognized that in my post, but it's Home Depot.  We're not getting any significant weather until tomorrow evening.  Most businesses were open this morning.  They weren't.  Considering the role they play in helping a community prepare for something like this, they should have been.
Title: Re: Hurricane Irma

Places like Loews or Home Depot it's a corporate decision to close - they're afraid of being sued by employees, and it likely is in a mandatory evacuation zone.

Even the McDonalds near my place was closed last night, pretty early too. Same deal. Little Ceasars was open though - I'm eating shitty leftover pizza right now!

My job on the other hand tried to spin working from home on Friday as "Because we're very concerned about our employees." - of course they only became very concerned shortly after Pinellas issued mandatory evacuations for Friday.

We're not in an evacuation zone or even forecast to get much ore than tropical storm force winds, but who knows?  There were probably extenuating circumstances.  We did have brief power outages yesterday.  Ace and Lowe's loved the extra business I'm sure.

Went to Lowes yesterday for salt bleach and pool stabilizer. Running my salt system wide open now (generating chlorine) will add a ton of bleach (chlorine) if we lose power to keep it from turning into a swamp. Will need to add salt and stabilizer after all the rain (pool will overflow).

Just to ease your mind, this is the most prepared hurricane ever, and everyone is helping each other.  Neighbors are coming out of the woodwork and giving a helping hand, which is the way it use to be long ago.  My brother tried to board up his windows with what he had, and left to help another elderly, and when he came back, his house was redone with hurricane shutters by a neighbor.  So, hopefully your kin will be in good hands...

to throw some positive info for everyone: the news is still saying this is a category 4, but wind speeds in key west right now (made landfall) have been reported at 100MPH (category 2). and this is a storm hitting land with nothing blocking wind speeds or slowing it down. just took a video grab off TV of 2 guys, on bicycles, at the southernmost point of key west, taking pictures. :)

who can stand straight up, not brace themselves, with nothing blocking you from the front wall of a category 4 storm?

and screw you FP&L. i went outside and sneezed, and 1400 homes lost power. :P

at&t gave us all free data until 9-17. that's nice, considering we'll all be watching youtube on phones for weeks.

edit: text me if you're bored. we need to have a brownout village party. it's been fun chatting with russ for the AM. :D

Generator hooked up and ready to go  :)

5,500 Watt dual fuel, gas and natural gas (NG) running on NG. Back feeding into main panel with proper interlock. Brought home a bunch of strip heaters from work to put it under load, while on NG it would only put out 30 A at 112 V (or 15 A at 225 V), about 3,400 W, stupid lower energy content NG!  :P

I started pulling reading on the essentials,  refrigerator - 1.5 Amps, beer cooler 1.4 Amps, upstairs AC unit, etc. The upstairs AC is just for the 240 ft^2 bonus room. Put the meter on the outside unit and get 7.5 A at 225 V, sweet! Now just check inrush, 46 Amps, crap! :o

Well what to do? Try turning on the AC with 1/3 the required starting Amps of course, hook it up, turn her on and the generator sounds like it's trying to take a 100 lb shit for a few seconds, but the AC turns on. :D I then flipped on the fridge, cooler a few lights and all was good.

So if we lose power will start the AC and crank her down as low as it will go, will just keep the door open to let the cool air downstairs and keep the room from getting too cold. I plan on running the AC nonstop until power is restored since starting it is so dicey.

neighbor is taking a "end of the world video" from their front porch, as i walk by with some tree branches and wave in 50ish MPH winds/rain. i go outside about every hour, just cleaning up.

that neighbor's mango tree is going to come down.

power is erratic. but uverse has been 100% :P. i've got everything that needs it on a battery backup.

and just pulled out the dreamcast. our generator will run 1 a/c in a small room, a TV, a fan, the dreamcast, and the main fridge.

i've unplugged everything else. man, the arcade has a lot of power cords.

i have to add, the tornado possibility warnings are just overdone. we're curfewed to our homes, and they want to constantly alert that tornadoes can be possible from now to then, put whatever hours you want there.

do these alerts help anyone?

it's a mid-level 3 now, about to hit naples, the downgrade in intensity is good news. they have been over-advertising the wind speeds, they appear to up the numbers about 5 miles an hour faster than actual recorded speeds from a few online searches i've seen.

60 people arrested in palm beach for curfew violations.

we keep losing power with no relation to activity outside, and we have power with 80 mile per hour winds.

can't complain. oh, just went out again.

I'm in the Brandon area.. between Tampa and Lakeland..

Most of the night winds were gusty but not bad. We have houses all around us and have a lake at an angle to us in the back. When the Hurricane actually hit it got howly but never scary. In the end it didn't even take out any of our Pool area screen or knock down any fences. Worst appears to be a boat load of branches down.

Next street over wasn't so lucky.. lots of trees up rooted and/or knocked down, but even then nothing catastrophic.

We lost power at Midnight.. right around when it was over us.. but it came back today right before noon so just about 12 hour outage. Been stable since then.

A lot of the roads flooded around us, apparently there was a redneck floating in a tube down Valrico road right near us but that seems to be about it.

I hope everyone else fared the same or better.

Hope everyone is well.

After much panicking by family members and many changes of plans we finally reverted back to plan A: I picked up my Parents and took them to my Sister's place in Lutz.

Power went out at 6pm Sunday and their fence got blown over but nothing major.

Lots of trees and fences down on the drive home Monday morning, but again nothing too major.

Power was out at my place and my Parent's place. I got power back about 7pm Monday.
Some big branches down, some gutters knocked down - but nothing that everyone else isn't also dealing with.

Cable/internet at home is still out so I'm at work now.

Definitely got lucky, it didn't go up Tampa Bay (at least the eye didn't) and it was only a category 1, maybe 2, when it got to Tampa/Lutz.

Storm surge was minimal in my area which is really the biggest part. Looks like the Keys got hit pretty hard and I'm sure it was much worse in Naples too.

Overall I certainly feel like I was fortunate, but this has definitely not diminished my desire to move to the desert. I've had enough with humidity, mosquitoes and most definitely hurricanes. Anyone hiring in Albuquerque?

In Gainesville area, still no power here in my community as my electric provider is different, though housing communities around have power and main city mostly seems to have power.

Some side streets in town are flooded over. My home seems ok. House is built to withstand 130mph winds and there are retention ponds surrounding, high curbs and properties are slanted up on a slope from streets.

I took in some stranded people from SW Florida for four nights and we played in the game room until a couple hours before electricity went out.

Wishing you all well!

for southeast florida (boynton, delray, west palm, boca), if you need help, and i'm not working, just shout. :)

our at&t uverse is destroyed, per a rep. she said 100+ pieces of equipment are dead that provide our TV/Internet. i think she's shoveling some bull crap, personally. :)

our a/c compressor is dead. sadly, it died last thursday. neighbor lost the avocado tree. backyard neighbor wanted me to pay 50% for her fence. i'm still laughing about that attempt at free money, free money...

i have a couple of good "height of the storm" videos, but can't get them on youtube yet, sadly. :(

i did park in the middle of i95 at 4PM saturday. that always makes for a good picture.

All the debris and the big uprooted tree are now neatly stacked on the curb.  Still got some busted branches hanging in the back and an oak with a cracked trunk.  Gonna start on those tomorrow.  Went down by the river today.  Hope it's done rising as buildings are starting to flood.  Crossing my fingers for power tomorrow but eta is no later than Sunday night. Gas is much less scarce today at least.

Next time this sucker gets under $600, I'm upgrading.

Still no power, but they at least started removing the trees on the line.  Neighbor's friend lost his home in Naples, said it is just flat out gone.  Just glad I'm not dealing with that.

Finally got power back tonight. Had some flooding and wind damage, still don't know the whole extent.

No power here. I few lines running back were "disturbed" and obviously I'm not a priority.
It's pretty bad.

All I've been doing all week is clearing, cutting, and sweating my balls off.
River came way up. Made a huge mess but other than shingle damage house made it ok.
It pounded Brevard County pretty good.

How is everyone making out with insurance claims?  I haven't had anyone from my insurance company look at my damages yet.  I am sure I am a low priority as it is just my fence.

If Wilma was an indicator, adjusters are going to be beyond overloaded. Wilma affected a portion of the state, Irma affected the WHOLE state. And of course there are still many people without power and basic needs, including those who work in the insurance claims industry.  Step one is getting people back to "normal".  As long as your claim is filed, you should be in the system.

Good luck!

anyone know any roofers? The insurance company wont cover my damage due to deductible vs claim :(

supposedly lost some shingles and some pulled up nails -- it allowed water into the house and I have water damage to the ceiling of my gameroom, kitchen and hallway..

Looking to at least get the roof shingles replaced/repaired to keep any MORE water out.. everything else will just have to be fixed at a later time.

Anyone?

Insurance companies are offering adjusters double the standard rate to get them to work FL cases as most are in TX right now.

As for roofers, they’re a lot in the state  without license nor insurance and you have to be careful. There is a GC that’s been working in the Orlando area if your interested.

13 years ago after hurricane Wilma and the next two, the only ones I could get to do my roof was Home Depot.
Very expensive but a lifetime warranty. (I just used it to have a leak fixed for free).
Good luck I hope you find someone.

Ya thanks.. just talked to B.G. Grace construction - they are going to come out and patch the roof for now to keep any OTHER water out of the roof.. and hopefully get an eyeball into the situation to see what they would charge to do the rest of the work..   Right now I have an adjuster quote of about 6500$ total for fixing the roof, ceiling work and repaint.. but If thats what the insurance company is coming in at.. I am thinking maybe 2-3g for a private contractor maybe to do some work..

Im not replacing the roof if I dont have to.

We have had good luck with Wayne, Gonzalez. Replaced the shingles under our solar panels due to the panels being installed improperly causing leaks and has re-roofed both our rental houses (one right before the hurricane). He was recommended to us from another family member and we always got a couple of other quotes (he was always the cheapest). Good work and a reasonable price.

Depends on what area of Naples. Some places look untouched minus some tree branches and others had part of there tile roofs blown off in a community I was in today. East Collier and Lehigh are having mega power issues with the amount of poles down. Welcome to the FL Zoo for the next year.

That sucks!  I read some area was having delays because some jackass stole the downed copper lines.  Woe be to that asshole when they find him.

I'm just racing to get my tree debris on the road at this point.  Pickup starts Wednesday.  I'll probably be the first for that and wouldn't mind a few more days to work on it.

they found them.  :)

as far as roofs, we had to have ours replaced around 2008 due to city code (crybabys, we were missing about 8 shingles...if I were to go back, I'd patch and paint to match original roof). well, fast forward...the $13,000 replacement roof wasn't as good as what we had...lol. replacement leaked in the first 2 days. called them back, and they patched their poor vent install, which I went back and patched better after they left.

you can patch your own roof if you can get up in the attic and locate leaks. there are dozens of products out there for patching roofs. I had to patch that brand new roof, due to a poor ventilation hatch install. that was over 8 years ago, no leaks...I've also added a powered vent, no leaks, within the last 2 months, as well as installing a turbine which exhaust attic heat better than the passive garbage they use nowadays...

just use the right product and if you're not comfortable, find someone who is. "professionals" aren't always so professional.

good luck.
